As the automotive industry moves past one of the worst recessions in recent history, new strategic partnerships are forming everywhere hopes of cutting costs when it comes to innovation. One of the most recent was the alliance between Renault-Nissan and Daimler AG which was announced just last week. Not to be completely left out, Chrysler is also finding partners, but interestingly enough not in the automotive industry. Instead, the Detroit automaker has entered a three year partnership with NASA to share information and technology related to several areas of mutual interest including space exploration and automotive technologies.
Chrysler has been falling behind other automakers when it comes to advanced hybrids and electric vehicles. However, Chrysler remains committed to bringing eco-friendly technology to consumers, and its new partnership with NASA will likely facilitate that goal. [click to continue…]

Although Chrysler has had its fair share of difficulties, you wouldn’t know it by asking Fiat SpA and Chrysler Group LLC CEO Sergio Marchionne. Not only did he assure journalists ahead of the New York Auto Show that Chrysler was making money, but more recently he said that the restructuring efforts that are underway there are already producing “positive results.”
Showing confidence in the automaker’s slow, but consistence process of turning Chrysler around, Marchionne is feeling better how the automaker’s outlook now than a year ago. [click to continue…]

Two of America’s favorite pastimes have finally come together in one practical package: As recently showcased at the New York Auto Show, Chrysler is now offering a mobile TV system that streams live television programming to the 2010 Chrysler Town & Country, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Commander, Dodge Caravan, Dodge Journey, Dodge Nitro, Ram 1500 and Ram 2500/3500 pickups. The price: $629 plus installation gets you the hardware and a one-year subscription to the service.
Positioned as a Mopar option, the system uses Audiovox-sourced components to receive signals “through a dedicated multicast network” from FLO TV, which, in turn, is a subsidiary of Qualcomm. The only addition visible to customers is a small roof-mounted antenna, about the size of a computer mouse. Well, that and live programming from a wide range of broadcast and cable TV channels, including ABC, ESPN, CBS, FOX, Disney Channel, NBC, Nickelodeon, MSNBC, Comedy Central and, of course, the Speed channel. As one of the few all-new Chrysler product to be released in quite some time, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is incredibly important, and Fiat is looking to do everything it can to make it a success. This also means delaying the Grand Cherokee’s launch if it’s not perfect.
According to Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, the upcoming Jeep Grand Cherokee is a “signature vehicle” for Chrysler and “must be flawless.” Otherwise, he warned, it will simply not be launched on time. [click to continue…]

Chrysler had a wild success on its hands when it launched the 300 sedan. The styling was distinctive, its performance was stellar, and it even carried respect as an entry-luxury model. But as the years rolled by, and as Chrysler’s financial problems mounted, the Chrysler 300 began to age very ungracefully as new sedans such as the stellar new Taurus caught the eyes of consumers.
With Chrysler’s financial struggles and subsequent bankruptcy, the replacement for the 300 sedan was stalled, but it was expected to finally arrive in early 2011. Luckily, new reports suggest that the sedan will arrive sooner than expected as Chrysler is rushing to get their flagship sedan into showrooms. [click to continue…]

Those lucky enough to attend the 15th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance recently had the chance to find out, as Richard Petty was honored at this year’s event in mid-March, and was the keynote speaker at the gala dinner as well.
Even better? The seven-time NASCAR champion brought along some of his hallmark racers, including a 1967 Plymouth Belvedere, 1974 Dodge Charger and 1982 Buick Regal—and perhaps Petty’s most iconic ride, the amazing 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Superbird. [click to continue…]

Although Chrysler hasn’t actually started building any of its new, Fiat-influenced vehicles yet, the company took a major step in the right direction recently: It began production on the engine that will power many of those autos, the all-new Pentastar V6.
Being assembled at Chrysler’s Trenton (Mich.) South Engine Plant, the Pentastar V6 is being touted as “the most advanced V6 engine in the company’s history.” The 3.6-liter powerplant boasts a high-pressure, die-cast aluminum block, high-flow intake and exhaust ports, dual-independent-cam phasing, revised valve angles and the proverbial much, much more. Despite suffering from a string of sales setbacks, Fred Diaz, president and CEO of Ram truck brand, said that sales were up 51% in the first three weeks of March. The announcement comes as Chrysler begins an aggressive advertising company for the updated 2010 heavy-duty Ram pickup truck.
Although sales are picking up for some vehicles within the Chrysler lineup, the automaker is relying on smart advertising, rather than offering substantial incentives like other automakers. [click to continue…]
