A senior Fiat powertrain exec confirmed to Motor Trend that the Italian automaker’s MultiAir valve-control technology will come to Chrysler’s family of engines. This technology promises to give Chrysler’s four- and six-cylinder engines more power and better fuel economy.
According to Motor Trend, development on Chrysler’s four- and six-cylinder engines featuring MultiAir tech is nearly complete. The revamped engines will come to Chrysler brand vehicles in both North America and Europe in the near future.
MultiAir is a computer-controlled electrohydraulic inlet valve lift and duration control system. Similar to BMW’s Valvetronic system, it’s easily adaptable to new engines and can reduce emissions by up to 10 percent.
The first application of MultiAir technology will be on Chrysler’s 1.4-liter four cylinder engine. This engine can be found currently on the American version of the Fiat 500 subcompact.
