The 2012 Chrysler 300S model made its debut this week at the New York International Auto Show. The new “S” line is a more stylish trim level being added to several Chrysler vehicles. But what’s unique on the new 300S is the all-new eight speed automatic transmission that’s mated to the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 under the hood.
For now, Chrysler’s new eight-speed will only be available in the 300S. For those opting for the more powerful 300 with the 5.7-liter V8, you’ll have to settle for the existing five-speed automatic.
These new transmissions are temporarily being purchased from ZF in Germany, which is why they are available on a very limited basis. But Chrysler is currently retooling its Kokomo, Indiana plant to build the new gearbox here in the U.S. Once the retooling is complete, the new eight-speed is expected to be available beyond the 300S model.
Aside from its unique gearbox, the 300S also features a Beats by Dr. Dre 10-speaker stereo system, piano-black interior accents, Nappa leather, a rear-view camera, rain-sensing wipers and a power tilt and telescoping steering column.
“No chrome . . . no wood . . . matte carbon fiber finishes . . . unique black or Radar Red leather . . . our biggest wheels, and world’s first integration of Beats by Dr. Dre audio technology – the best standard audio system period. This is the new Chrysler 300S and it has an attitude that comes through loud and clear,” said Olivier Francois, President and CEO – Chrysler Brand and Lead Executive for Marketing, Chrysler Group LLC.
