Two more members of the Chrysler Group’s redesigned 2011 new-vehicle lineup earned key third-party safety recognition recently, when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger to its roster of 2011 Top Safety Picks.

Significantly, each relies on a two-pronged safety strategy to achieve strong crash-test ratings like these. The dramatically styled sedans boast both active safety systems like standard electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, Hill Start Assist, Rain Brake Support and Ready Alert Braking, as well as passive safety measures such as front reactive head restraints and a comprehensive suite of airbags. These include full-length side-curtain airbags, seat-mounted side-thorax air bags and a driver’s knee bag.

“With the addition of the new Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, Chrysler Group now has seven Top Safety Picks in the 2011 model year. This recognition by the IIHS underscores our commitment to safety across all vehicle segments,” said Scott Kunselman, senior vice president for Engineering at the Chrysler Group LLC.

The automaker’s other five Top Safety Picks for the current model year:

Being named an IIHS Top Safety Pick represents an impressive accomplishment, as it requires vehicles to achieve the best possible ratings in the Institute’s front, side, rollover and rear-impact crash tests, as well as a new, more rigorous roof-strength test, introduced for the 2011 model year. They also must offer electronic stability control.

“As we continue our product transformation,” added Kunselman, “we’ll continue to engineer safety leadership and more capabilities into all our vehicles.”
